Choosing a private banker in Fribourg, a bilingual canton

To choose a private bank in Fribourg, start from your own situation: the language of your meetings and documents in a bilingual canton, where you would like to meet your banker, between home and work, and how the relationship will be looked after. This page presents the institutions whose Fribourg office we have verified, the canton's banking landscape and the questions to ask depending on your situation.

Fribourg, capital of a bilingual canton

Fribourg, Freiburg in German, is the capital of the canton of the same name (constitution of the canton of Fribourg, art. 2). The canton has two official languages, French and German. Each municipality has one or the other as its official language, and both may be official in a municipality with a significant indigenous linguistic minority (art. 6). According to the State Chancellery, 69% of the canton's population is French-speaking and 25% German-speaking (2020 figures), and the capital lies on the language border. The Sense (Singine) district is German-speaking, the Lake (Lac/See) district bilingual and the other five districts French-speaking. English is not an official language of the canton.

The University of Fribourg, founded in 1889, lets students study in French, in German or in both, with a degree that can carry a mention of bilingual studies.

The canton has its own cantonal bank: Banque Cantonale de Fribourg (BCF), Freiburger Kantonalbank in German, which is wholly owned by the canton according to its 2025 annual report, states that it has 26 branches covering the entire canton.

If your household speaks more than one language, if you moved to Switzerland for a post at the university or with a company in the region, or if you live in the canton and work in Bern or Lausanne, two questions come up early with a private banker: the language of the relationship and where you will meet.

This page is for people who live in Switzerland, in Fribourg or elsewhere in the canton, or who are preparing to move there, and who are considering entrusting substantial financial assets to a private banker. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. For an overview of the selection criteria, see our page on Swiss private banks.

Institutions with an office in Fribourg

The list below shows, in alphabetical order, the institutions in our database for which we have verified an office serving private clients in Fribourg. Being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order of the list nor whether an institution appears in it.

Institutions with a private-client office in Fribourg, in alphabetical order

  • BCF
  • Edmond de Rothschild
  • Lombard Odier
  • UBS

This list does not cover every institution active in Fribourg: it covers those in our database whose presence in Fribourg is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

For the canton of Fribourg, our database covers the city of Fribourg only, including for BCF, whose branch network covers the whole canton. It records more institutions in Bern and in Lausanne, presented on our pages on private banks in Bern and private banks in Lausanne. If you work in one of these cities, you can ask your banker whether meetings could take place near your workplace rather than your home.

In which language will you be looked after in Fribourg?

It depends on the institution and on the person who looks after you, not on the official language of your municipality. If you would like to work in English, the question is all the more concrete, since English is not an official language of the canton. It also arises at several levels, and the answer may differ from one to the next:

  • meetings and phone calls with your banker;
  • written exchanges, emails and letters;
  • the account-opening documents and the agreement that governs the relationship;
  • statements and periodic reports;
  • the person who stands in when your banker is away, and the language in which they reply;
  • the language of your family members, if your spouse or children are involved in the relationship.

A banker who holds meetings in your language does not guarantee documents in that same language. Ask about each of these points. If your household uses more than one language, name them and say who needs to be able to read which documents.

What matters when choosing a banker in Fribourg

Here are the criteria to look at, and the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Fribourg
CriterionQuestion to ask
Language of the relationshipIn which language will we hold our meetings and written exchanges, in which language will I receive the documents, and who will reply to me in that language when you are away?
Meeting placeWill our meetings take place at your offices in Fribourg, at another office, for example in Bern or Lausanne, or remotely?
ContinuityWho will be my contact, who takes over if you are away or change roles, and how often will we review things together?
Family businessHow do you take into account a business I own, and a succession or sale that is being prepared?
Working with your other advisersHow do you work with my fiduciary, notary or tax adviser, if I have one?

If you live in the Gruyère, the Broye, the Glâne or the Veveyse, or in the Sense or Lake districts, ask early where your meetings would take place. An office in Fribourg makes meeting in person easier, but your banker may be attached to another office, and some of your exchanges may take place remotely.

These criteria match the questions of the AlpineCompare simulator: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

A few situations and the questions to raise

The examples below are for illustration: they do not describe real clients and do not call for a standard answer. They show which points to clarify with a private banker depending on your situation.

A few situations and the questions to raise
Your situationQuestions to raise
You run or own a family business in the cantonWhich part of your wealth is available, and which remains invested in the business? If a succession or a sale is being prepared, on what timetable, and how does your banker coordinate with your fiduciary or notary?
You live in the canton and work in Bern or LausanneCan meetings take place near your workplace, or remotely? How can you reach your banker at times that suit you?
Your household uses several languages, such as French, German and EnglishCan each person receive the documents that concern them in their own language? Who at the institution can look after you in those languages?
You moved to Switzerland recently, for example for a post at the university or with a company in the regionWhich documents are needed to open the relationship? How are accounts or assets left abroad taken into account, and what would happen to the relationship if your post took you elsewhere?
Pension capital has already been paid out to youWhich outgoings is this capital meant to cover, and over what horizon? How is the relationship organised once the funds are in the account?

Whether or not to draw pension capital is a separate decision, made before the payment with a pension specialist. Fribourg tax questions, for example on wealth or inheritance, are also a matter for specialists: ask the institution whether it handles them with its own teams or works with your fiduciary or tax adviser.

Different types of institution

In Fribourg, as elsewhere in Switzerland, a wealth management relationship can be held with a private bank, a universal bank, a cantonal bank or an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

A first conversation is more useful once you have clarified a few points. Before your meeting, you can prepare:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of: cash, securities already invested, the proceeds of a sale;
  • what you expect from the relationship: management of your investments, organising capital you have received, preparing to pass on your wealth;
  • your timetable, for example the date on which funds will become available;
  • the language you wish to speak, the language in which you wish to receive documents, and that of the family members involved;
  • where meetings suit you best: near your home, near your work, or remotely;
  • your residence permit and date of arrival, if your move to Switzerland is recent, as well as any accounts or assets you hold in other countries;
  • the contact details of your other advisers: fiduciary, notary, tax adviser.

Then note each banker's answers on the same points: you can compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch in Fribourg

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Fribourg. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Fribourg and works in English. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting are then agreed with them.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Fribourg to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers.

Can I work with a private banker in Fribourg in English?

It depends on the institution and the banker. The official languages of the canton of Fribourg are French and German (art. 6 of the cantonal constitution), so English is not an official language there, and the language of your exchanges is worth settling at the first contact, for meetings as well as for written documents. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker.

Why does the list show only four institutions?

Because it only includes the institutions in our database for which we have verified an office serving private clients in Fribourg: a cantonal bank, two private banks and a universal bank. Other institutions are active in the city and the canton without being in our database. Our database records more institutions in Bern and in Lausanne.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Fribourg?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all Fribourg institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities, rather than total wealth, which includes, for example, the value of a home or a business. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Fribourg?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
