Choosing a private banker in Lausanne based on your situation

To choose a private bank in Lausanne, start from your own situation: the language you want to use, the international side of your circumstances, where in the canton you want to meet and how the relationship will be looked after. This page lists the institutions whose Lausanne office we have verified, describes the Vaud banking landscape and sets out the questions to ask depending on your situation.

Lausanne: capital of Vaud and a banking centre

Lausanne is the capital of the canton of Vaud, whose official language is French (Vaud cantonal constitution, art. 3 and 4). The canton has its own cantonal bank: Banque Cantonale Vaudoise, founded in 1845 by the cantonal government, says it has close to 60 branches in the canton. Several private banks and other institutions also publish an office in Lausanne; the list further down shows those in our database.

The International Olympic Committee has had its headquarters in Lausanne since 1915. According to the City of Lausanne, the international sports community that has grown up around it brings together some 60 international sports federations and organisations (press release of 5 October 2026). If your work is the reason you moved to Switzerland, whether with one of these organisations, a company or a university in the region, your situation has an international side: another nationality, family or accounts abroad, perhaps a move elsewhere one day. These points matter when choosing a banker.

This page is for people who live in Switzerland, in Lausanne or elsewhere in the canton of Vaud, or who are preparing to move there, and who are considering entrusting substantial financial assets to a private banker. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. The selection criteria that apply across Switzerland are set out on our page on Swiss private banks.

Institutions with an office in Lausanne

The list below shows, in alphabetical order, the institutions in our database for which we have verified an office serving private clients in Lausanne. Being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order of the list nor whether an institution appears in it.

This list does not cover every institution active in Lausanne: it covers those in our database whose presence in Lausanne is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

Several of the addresses we recorded are in the city centre, between the railway station and Place Saint-François. Some institutions in our database also publish an office elsewhere in the canton, in Montreux, Nyon, Vevey or Yverdon-les-Bains; the list shows only their presence in Lausanne.

What matters when choosing a banker in Lausanne

Here are the criteria to look at, with the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Lausanne
CriterionQuestion to ask
LanguageIn which language will our meetings and written exchanges take place, and who will answer me in that language when you are away?
International situationHow do you take into account another nationality, accounts or assets in another country, or a possible move away from Switzerland later on?
Meeting placeWill our meetings take place at your Lausanne offices, at another office in the canton or remotely?
ContinuityWho will be my contact, who takes over if they are away or change roles, and how often will we review things together?
Working with your other advisersHow do you work with my fiduciary, my notary or my tax adviser, if I have one?

If you live on La Côte, in Lavaux, on the Vaud Riviera or in the north of the canton, ask early where meetings would take place. An office in Lausanne makes meeting in person easier, but your banker may be attached to another office, and some exchanges may take place remotely.

These criteria match the questions of the AlpineCompare simulator: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

A few situations and the questions they raise

The examples below are illustrations: they do not describe real clients and do not call for a standard answer. They show which points to clarify with a private banker, depending on your situation.

A few situations and the questions they raise
Your situationQuestions to discuss
You work for an international sports federation or organisationHow would the relationship be organised if your contract took you out of Switzerland one day? In which language will you be looked after, and how are your accounts in other countries taken into account?
Your family has recently moved to the cantonWhich documents are needed to open the relationship? How are accounts or assets left abroad taken into account?
You have sold all or part of your companyWill the proceeds arrive in one payment or in stages? How does your banker coordinate the timetable with your fiduciary or lawyer?
You have received an inheritance or a giftWhich part is already invested and which part is cash? How can you prepare, with your other advisers, what you wish to pass on to your family?
Pension capital has already been paid out to youWhich outgoings should this capital cover, and over what period? How is the relationship organised once the funds are in the account?

Whether or not to withdraw pension capital is a separate decision, taken before the payout and with a pensions specialist. Vaud tax questions, for example on wealth or inheritance, also belong with specialists: ask the institution whether it handles them with its own teams or works with your fiduciary or tax adviser.

Different types of institution

In Lausanne, as elsewhere in Switzerland, a wealth management relationship can be held with a private bank, a universal bank, a cantonal bank or an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

Before a first meeting, a few points prepared in advance make the conversation more useful:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of: cash, securities already invested, the proceeds of a sale;
  • what you expect from the relationship: management of your investments, organising capital you have received, preparing to pass on your wealth;
  • your timetable, for example the date on which funds will become available;
  • your residence permit and the date you arrived, if your move to Switzerland is recent;
  • the accounts, assets or family members you have in other countries;
  • the contact details of your other advisers: fiduciary, notary, tax adviser;
  • the language you wish to use, spoken and written.

Then note each banker's answers on the same points: you can compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch in Lausanne

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Lausanne. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Lausanne. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting are then agreed with them.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Lausanne to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers.

Can I work with a private banker in Lausanne in English, without speaking French?

It depends on the institution and the banker. The official language of the canton of Vaud is French (art. 3 of the Vaud cantonal constitution), so the language of your exchanges is worth clarifying from the outset. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker. In any case, confirm the language of your spoken and written exchanges at the first contact.

Are there private banks elsewhere in the canton of Vaud, for example in Nyon or Vevey?

Yes. Our database records offices of private banks in Nyon, Vevey and Yverdon-les-Bains, and offices of other institutions in Montreux; Banque Cantonale Vaudoise says it has close to 60 branches in the canton. The list on this page shows only offices in Lausanne. If you live elsewhere in the canton, ask your banker where your meetings would take place.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Lausanne?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all Lausanne institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities, rather than total wealth, which includes, for example, the value of a home. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Lausanne?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
