Choosing a private banker in Schaffhausen: ties with Germany, meetings and a first conversation

In Schaffhausen, two questions weigh on the choice of a private banker: how your banker will take account of what you own in Germany or in your home country, and which office will look after your relationship, in Schaffhausen, in Winterthur or in Zurich. This page presents the institutions whose Schaffhausen office we have verified, then the criteria, situations and questions that will help you prepare a first conversation.

Choosing a private bank in Schaffhausen

According to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, Schaffhausen is the only Swiss canton that lies entirely north of the Rhine, apart from a small part of the municipality of Stein am Rhein, and most of its border separates it from Germany. The canton's economic promotion agency highlights a ‘rich industrial heritage’ and states that over the past two decades Schaffhausen has developed into a location for international headquarters. Both features show up in the choice of a private banker: what you own across the border, and any shares you hold with an industrial employer or an international group, are part of what your banker will need to understand.

This page is for people who live in Switzerland, in Schaffhausen or elsewhere in the canton, including those of another nationality, and for people preparing to move there. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. For an overview of the selection criteria, see our page on Swiss private banks.

Institutions with an office in Schaffhausen

The list below shows, in alphabetical order, the institutions in our database for which we have verified an office receiving private clients in Schaffhausen; at the date of our last check there are two, a cantonal bank and a universal bank. Being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order of the list nor whether an institution appears in it.

Institutions with a private-client office in Schaffhausen, in alphabetical order

  • SHKB
  • UBS

This list does not cover every institution active in Schaffhausen: it covers those in our database whose presence in Schaffhausen is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

The canton's own cantonal bank, Schaffhauser Kantonalbank, has its head office on the Vorstadt in Schaffhausen, the city the list links it to; its ‘Hauptsitz & Filialen’ page also lists a branch in Stein am Rhein. Its website presents wealth management mandates among the bank's services, without tying them to either site. The UBS branch we have recorded is on Schwertstrasse: its page lists wealth management among the services offered, alongside services for private clients and for companies, and gives separate opening hours for advisory meetings. We accessed the UBS page on 20 October 2026 and the cantonal bank's pages on 21 October 2026.

Beyond Schaffhausen: Winterthur and Zurich

If you want to compare several institutions you could meet in person, our database records more of them in Winterthur and above all in Zurich; they are listed on our pages on private banks in Winterthur and private banks in Zurich.

An office in another city says little about how the relationship will work. Ask each banker whether they can meet you in Schaffhausen, how often, and how much of your contact can take place by phone or video. Ask too who would look after your wealth day to day, someone at the local branch or a wealth management team attached to another office.

What matters when choosing a banker in Schaffhausen

Here are the criteria to look at when choosing a private banker in Schaffhausen, and the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Schaffhausen
CriterionQuestion to ask
Ties with GermanyHow do you take account of an account, a property or an inheritance in Germany, and what will I need to entrust to another specialist?
Who looks after your wealthWill you be my day-to-day contact, or will my account be handed to a wealth management team, and in which office does it work?
Meeting placeWill our meetings take place in Schaffhausen, at another of your offices or remotely?
Shares from your employerHow do you include shares or options from my employer in the overall view of my wealth, including those I cannot sell yet?
Language of the relationshipIn which language will our meetings take place, and in which language will I receive the agreement, statements and reports?
ContinuityHow often will we review things together, and who takes over if you are away or if my banker changes?

If you live in the Klettgau, the Reiat or the Stein am Rhein area, ask early where your meetings would take place.

These criteria match the questions of the AlpineCompare simulator: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

Situations in Schaffhausen, and what to clarify

The examples below are for illustration: they do not describe real clients and do not call for a standard answer. They show which points to clarify with a private banker depending on your situation.

Situations in Schaffhausen, and what to clarify
Your situationQuestions to raise
You live in the canton and own a property, an account or a share of an inheritance in GermanyWhich of these does your banker include in the overall view of your wealth, and which belong with a specialist in German law?
You moved to Schaffhausen from Germany or another countryWhich documents are needed to open the relationship? How are accounts and assets remaining in your home country, sometimes in euros, taken into account?
You work for an international group or an industrial company and hold shares from your employerWhat share of your wealth do these securities represent, which can you freely dispose of, which are still vesting or subject to a blocking period, and where are they held?
You run an industrial or trade business, or are preparing to hand it overHow do you separate what belongs to the company from your private wealth? When will sale proceeds become available, and how is the timetable organised if the succession is being prepared within the family?
You have received an inheritance, or pension capital has already been paid out to youWhat amount is available, over what horizon, and what do you expect from the organisation of this capital?

Whether you draw a pension or a lump sum from your pension fund depends on its regulations and is not the subject of this page. Tax and inheritance questions involving Germany also belong with specialists: ask the institution whether it handles them with its own teams or works with your tax adviser or notary.

Different types of institution

In Schaffhausen as elsewhere in Switzerland, a wealth management relationship can be held with a private bank, a universal bank, a cantonal bank or an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

Before your meeting, you can gather:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of, separating cash, securities already invested and employer shares;
  • a list of what lies outside Switzerland: accounts, property, assets in Germany or in your home country;
  • your timetable, for example the date on which sale proceeds or shares that are still blocked will become available;
  • your residence permit and proof of address in Switzerland, if you have just moved;
  • the contact details of your other advisers, fiduciary, notary or tax adviser, including in Germany;
  • where you would prefer to meet, in Schaffhausen, in another city or remotely, and the language you wish to use, spoken and written;
  • your questions on continuity if your banker is away or changes.

During the conversation, note each banker's answers on the same points: you can then compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch from Schaffhausen

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Schaffhausen. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Schaffhausen, in Winterthur, in Zurich or in another city, and whether they list English among their languages. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting, in person or remote, are then agreed with them.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Schaffhausen to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers. If you work in Schaffhausen but live in Germany with no plan to move to Switzerland, the introduction service is not intended for your situation.

I am moving to Schaffhausen from Germany. Can I use the simulator before I arrive?

Yes. Introductions are also offered to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. As long as you are not yet domiciled in Switzerland, your request must be made exclusively on your own initiative, and it is for you to ensure that contacting a Swiss institution is lawful under the law that applies to you. Each partner institution alone decides whether it can follow up on your request.

Why does the list show only two institutions?

It includes only the institutions in our database whose Schaffhausen office is published by the institution itself and verified by us. Other institutions may be active in Schaffhausen or look after clients from Schaffhausen from Winterthur, Zurich or another city. These absences say nothing about what they offer; they only reflect the state of our database as of our last check.

Can I work with a private banker in Schaffhausen in English?

It depends on the institution and the banker. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker. Say at the first contact which language you would like to use, and ask in which language you will receive the documents of the relationship.

Do shares from my employer count as assets I can entrust?

Shares you already hold are part of your financial assets, but not all of them are available in the same way. Distinguish the securities you can freely dispose of from those subject to a blocking period, and from awards still vesting, such as restricted stock units, which you do not yet hold; say where they are held. Your banker can then understand what can be entrusted today and what will follow later.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Schaffhausen?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities: a home, in Switzerland or in Germany, or shares that are still blocked are not part of them. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Schaffhausen?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
