Private banks in Lucerne: choosing a banker in Central Switzerland

To choose a private bank in Lucerne, start from your own situation: where you live, in the city, elsewhere in the canton or in a neighbouring canton, a family business or a hotel you own or run, retirement ahead and the language you want to use. This page lists the institutions whose Lucerne office we have verified, then the criteria and questions that will help you prepare a first conversation.

Choosing a private bank in Lucerne

Lucerne is the capital of a canton that, together with Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden and Zug, makes up Central Switzerland; the six cantons work together in the Central Switzerland government conference (Zentralschweizer Regierungskonferenz). At the end of 2025, the canton of Lucerne had around 441,500 inhabitants. 21.9% of them were foreign nationals and 19.4% were aged 65 or over (LUSTAT, the canton's statistics office, table updated on 4 August 2026). In the city itself, nearly one job in eight depended on tourism in 2019, according to a BAK Economics study carried out for Lucerne Tourism, the canton and the city.

For the choice of a private banker, this translates into a few concrete points: where meetings take place if you live outside the city, how a family business or a hotel is taken into account alongside your private wealth, what changes at retirement and which language the relationship is conducted in if you moved to Switzerland recently.

This page is for people who live in Switzerland, in Lucerne, elsewhere in the canton or in a neighbouring canton, including those with another nationality, or who are preparing to move here, and who are considering entrusting substantial financial assets to a private banker. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. For an overview of the selection criteria, see our page on Swiss private banks.

Institutions with an office in Lucerne

The list below shows, in alphabetical order, the institutions in our database for which we have verified an office serving private clients in Lucerne. Being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order of the list nor whether an institution appears in it.

Institutions with a private-client office in Lucerne, in alphabetical order

  • J. Safra Sarasin
  • Julius Bär
  • LUKB
  • Reichmuth & Co
  • UBS
  • Vontobel

This list does not cover every institution active in Lucerne: it covers those in our database whose presence in Lucerne is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

Two institutions in the list have their head office in Lucerne. The cantonal bank, Luzerner Kantonalbank, states in its company profile that it operates 22 branches in the canton of Lucerne and one site in Zurich; its private banking page names Lucerne, Sursee and Zurich as the places where it advises clients in person. Reichmuth & Co, a private bank, publishes three locations in Switzerland: Lucerne, where it has its head office, Zurich and St. Gallen. The other institutions in the list have their head office in another city and an office in Lucerne. In every case, ask which office your banker is attached to.

If you live in a neighbouring canton, our database also records private-client offices in Altdorf, Sarnen, Schwyz, Stans and Zug. They do not appear here, because the list covers the city of Lucerne only.

What matters when choosing a banker in Lucerne

Here are the criteria to look at when choosing a private banker in Lucerne, and the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Lucerne
CriterionQuestion to ask
Meeting placeWill our meetings take place at your offices in Lucerne, at an office closer to where I live or remotely?
Business or hotelHow do you take into account a family business, a hotel, a restaurant or a holding that is not part of my available financial assets?
LanguageWill our meetings and written exchanges be in English, German or another language, and who will step in, in that language, when you are away?
Stage of lifeHow do you take into account retirement ahead, a succession in the business or passing on wealth within the family?
How the relationship is organisedWho will be my contact, how often will we review things together, and how can I reach you between meetings?

An office in Lucerne makes meeting in person easier, but on its own it says nothing about how your relationship will be organised: your banker may be attached to another office, and some of your exchanges may take place remotely. If you live in Sursee, the Entlebuch, Zug or Stans, ask where your meetings would take place.

These criteria match the questions of the AlpineCompare simulator: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

Business, hospitality, retirement: what is worth preparing

The table below covers situations linked to the canton's economy and population, and others found anywhere in Switzerland, with what is worth preparing for each. These are not recommendations: investment, pension and tax decisions are made with the relevant professionals.

Business, hospitality, retirement: what is worth preparing
Your situationWhat is worth preparing
You run or own a family businessDistinguish your available financial assets from the value of the business. If a family succession or a sale is being prepared, give its timetable and the amounts that may become available, without counting them as already there.
You own or run a hotel, a restaurant or another tourism businessKeep the business's funds separate from your private wealth. If you own the building the business operates in, it counts towards your total wealth, not your available financial assets. Say too which months your business keeps you busiest, so that meetings fall in quieter periods.
Retirement ahead or recentWhether you draw a pension or a lump sum from your pension fund depends on its regulations and is not the subject of this page. If a lump sum has already been paid, or its payment date is known, give the amount and that date, and say whether you also want to discuss passing on wealth to your family.
Living in a neighbouring cantonGive your canton of residence and say whether you would rather travel to Lucerne for meetings or meet a banker closer to home.
Recent move to SwitzerlandGive your date of arrival, your residence status and the assets you still hold in your country of origin, then ask which documents the institution will request as a result.

Our page on your situation sets out, for the whole of Switzerland, what is worth preparing after selling a business, receiving an inheritance or selling a property.

Different types of institution

In Lucerne the list includes private banks, a universal bank and the cantonal bank; a wealth management relationship can also be held with an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

A first conversation is more useful once you have clarified a few points. Before your meeting, you can prepare:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of: cash, securities already invested, pension capital already paid out, the proceeds of a sale;
  • an overview that separates your private wealth from the funds and buildings of your business;
  • what you expect from the relationship: management of your investments, organising capital you have received, preparing to pass on your wealth;
  • your timetable, for example your retirement date, the handover of your business or the date on which funds will become available;
  • the parts of your situation that go beyond Switzerland: another nationality, family members or assets in other countries, a recent move;
  • the language you wish to use, spoken and written, and where you would like to meet your banker;
  • your questions on continuity: who takes over if your banker is away or changes.

During the conversation, note each banker's answers on the same points: you can then compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch in Lucerne

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Lucerne. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Lucerne and whether they list English among their languages. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting are then agreed with them.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Lucerne to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers; if you live in Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden or Zug, give that canton.

I live in Zug or Nidwalden: can my banker be based in Lucerne?

It depends on the institution and on the arrangements you agree with it. Ask where your meetings would take place and which office your banker is attached to. Our database also records private-client offices in Altdorf, Sarnen, Schwyz, Stans and Zug, and the selection obtained with the simulator shows each banker's city.

Can I work with a private banker in Lucerne in English?

It depends on the institution and the banker. The official language of the canton of Lucerne is German (§ 7 of the cantonal constitution); the language of your banking relationship, on the other hand, is agreed with the institution. Settle it at the first contact, for meetings as well as for documents. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker.

Does my hotel building count as wealth I can entrust to a private bank?

Not as available financial assets. A building, whether you live in it or run your business from it, is part of your total wealth; what you entrust to a private banker is cash and securities. The building remains useful information for your banker, for example when a handover of the business or a sale is being prepared.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Lucerne?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all Lucerne institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities, rather than total wealth, which includes, for example, the value of a building or a business. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Lucerne?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
