Choosing a private banker in Bellinzona based on your situation

Bellinzona is the capital of the canton of Ticino and the seat of its parliament and government. To choose a private bank there, start from your own situation: the language of your meetings and documents, a retirement coming up or pension capital already paid out, a business to keep separate from your private assets, any links with Italy or another canton, and where you would like to meet. This page presents the two institutions whose Bellinzona office we have verified, the cantonal bank among them, says where our database records others in Ticino, then sets out the questions to ask depending on your situation.

Bellinzona, capital of the canton of Ticino

Ticino's cantonal constitution names Bellinzona as the capital of the canton and the seat of the Grand Council and the Council of State, its parliament and government (art. 5). Since 2017, after thirteen municipalities of the Bellinzonese merged, the city has also included districts such as Giubiasco, Sementina, Monte Carasso and Claro.

Working for the cantonal administration or another public institution, running a small or medium-sized business in the region, preparing to pass your wealth on to your children, moving here from another canton: each of these situations raises different questions to clarify with a private banker. This page goes through them.

It is for people who live in Bellinzona, in the Bellinzonese or elsewhere in Ticino, or who are moving there, from another canton or from abroad, and who are considering entrusting substantial financial assets to a private banker. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. For an overview of the selection criteria, see our page on Swiss private banks.

Institutions with an office in Bellinzona

In our database, the choice of verified offices in Bellinzona itself remains limited: at the date of our last check, we record two institutions there serving private clients, the cantonal bank and a universal bank. The list below shows them in alphabetical order. Being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order of the list nor whether an institution appears in it.

Institutions with a private-client office in Bellinzona, in alphabetical order

  • BancaStato
  • UBS

The cantonal bank, Banca dello Stato del Cantone Ticino (‘BancaStato’ in the list), has its seat in Bellinzona under the cantonal law of 25 October 1988 that governs it. A document from the bank on its advisory services says that an appointment can be made at one of its four branches, in Bellinzona, Locarno, Lugano and Chiasso; it does not say how its private banking is organised from one branch to another.

UBS lists wealth management (‘Wealth Management’) among the services of its branch on Largo Elvezia. A branch page does not describe every service an institution offers, nor does it say where the people who would look after your assets work: ask about it in your first conversation. This list does not cover every institution active in Bellinzona: it covers those in our database whose presence in the city is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

Beyond Bellinzona: Lugano and Locarno

To compare more institutions, our database records more of them in Lugano; they are presented on our page on private banks in Lugano. In the north of the canton, it also records a few offices in Locarno.

An office close to home makes meeting in person easier, but your banker may be attached to another office, and some exchanges may take place remotely. If you live in one of the city's districts, in the valleys north of it or in the Moesa region of Graubünden, ask each banker where your meetings would take place, how often, and what can be done by phone or video.

What matters when choosing a banker in Bellinzona

Here are the criteria to look at when choosing a private banker in Bellinzona, and the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Bellinzona
CriterionQuestion to ask
Language of meetings and documentsCan we work in English, and in which language will I receive contracts, statements and written communications?
Domicile and links abroadDo you usually look after clients domiciled in Switzerland? How do you take into account assets, family members or a nationality in Italy or another country?
Pension and timingHow do you take into account pension capital already paid out, or a retirement date that is already known?
Meeting placeWhere will our meetings take place: at your offices in Bellinzona, at another office in Ticino or remotely?
How the relationship is organisedWho will be my contact, how often will we review things together, and who steps in when you are away?
Working with your other advisersHow would you work with my fiduciary, my notary or my tax adviser?

The AlpineCompare simulator asks you questions close to these criteria: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

A few situations in Bellinzona and the questions they raise

The examples below are illustrations: they do not describe real clients and do not call for a standard answer. They show which points to clarify with a private banker, depending on your situation.

A few situations in Bellinzona and the questions they raise
Your situationQuestions to discuss
You work for the cantonal administration or another public institution and your retirement is approachingIf pension capital has already been paid out to you, or the payout date is known, which outgoings should it cover and over what period? How is the relationship organised once the funds are in the account?
You run a small or medium-sized business in the region or are preparing its successionHow do you separate what belongs to the business from your private assets? If the proceeds of a sale arrive in one payment or in stages, how does your banker coordinate the timetable with your fiduciary?
You are preparing to pass your wealth on to your childrenHow does your banker work with your notary? How could your family be informed, including if they live in another canton or abroad?
You are moving to Bellinzona from another cantonIn which language will you be looked after, and in which language will you receive your documents? What happens to the relationship with the bank that looks after you today?

If your family has Italian roots, or you own a business or assets in Italy, a first conversation is more useful once you have an overview of what is held in Switzerland and what is held abroad. Tax and inheritance questions involving two countries are for a tax adviser or a lawyer; you can ask the banker how they take these elements into account in organising the relationship.

If you are coming from abroad and preparing to move to Ticino, your request must be made on your own initiative. You can already gather the documents on the origin of your assets and on your future domicile: institutions address these topics when opening a relationship. For other situations, such as an inheritance or the sale of a property, see our page on your situation.

Whether you draw a pension or a lump sum from your pension fund is decided before the payout, under the fund's regulations, and is not the subject of this page. Ticino tax questions, for example on wealth or inheritance, also belong with specialists: ask the institution whether it handles them with its own teams or works with your fiduciary or tax adviser.

Different types of institution

In Bellinzona, as elsewhere in Switzerland, a wealth management relationship can be held with a private bank, a universal bank, a cantonal bank or an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

A first conversation is more useful once you have clarified a few points. Before your meeting, you can prepare:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of: cash, securities already invested, pension capital already paid out, the proceeds of a sale;
  • where your assets are held today: in Switzerland, in Italy or in another country;
  • what you expect from the relationship: management of your investments, organising capital you have received, preparing to pass on your wealth;
  • your timetable, for example your retirement date, the date of a move or the date on which funds will become available;
  • if you run a business, a clear view of what belongs to the company and what belongs to you personally;
  • the contact details of the professionals who already work with you, such as a fiduciary, a notary or a tax adviser;
  • the language you wish to use, spoken and written, including for documents.

During the conversation, note each banker's answers on the same points: you can then compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch from Bellinzona

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Bellinzona. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Bellinzona, elsewhere in Ticino or in another city, and whether they speak English. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting are then agreed with them. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Bellinzona to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers. People who work in Ticino but remain domiciled in Italy fall outside this scope.

Can I work with a private banker in Bellinzona in English, without speaking Italian?

It depends on the institution and the banker. Ticino's cantonal constitution describes the canton as a republic ‘of Italian culture and language’ (art. 1), so a relationship in English is worth clarifying from the outset, including the language of contracts and statements. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker.

Why are there only two institutions in the list?

It includes only the institutions in our database whose Bellinzona office is published by the institution itself and verified by us. Other institutions may look after clients from the region from another office, in Lugano or Locarno for example. The selection obtained with the simulator may include bankers based in other cities.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Bellinzona?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities, rather than total wealth, which includes, for example, the value of a property or a business. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Bellinzona?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
