Choosing a private banker in Winterthur: local offices, meetings and a first conversation

To choose a private bank in Winterthur, start with two questions: who will look after your wealth, someone at the local branch or a team in another office, for example in Zurich, and where will your meetings take place? This page lists the institutions whose Winterthur office we have verified, summarises what their branch pages show, then sets out what to clarify if you run a company, hold shares from your employer or work in Zurich.

Choosing a private bank in Winterthur

According to the City of Winterthur, Winterthur is the sixth-largest city in Switzerland; it had 122,937 inhabitants in 2025. Once an industrial city, it now describes itself as a centre for education and technology, with around 80,000 people employed and 8,000 companies, and ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences has one of its campuses there, alongside Zurich and Wädenswil (figures published by the city and by ZHAW, accessed on 20 October 2026). These points shed light on several situations in which you may look for a private banker in Winterthur: running or handing over a company, holding shares from an employer, or living in Winterthur and working in Zurich.

This page is for people who live in Switzerland, in Winterthur or the surrounding region, including those of another nationality, and for people preparing to move to the canton of Zurich. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. For an overview of the selection criteria, see our page on Swiss private banks.

Institutions with an office in Winterthur

The list below shows, in alphabetical order, the institutions in our database for which we have verified an office serving private clients in Winterthur. Being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order of the list nor whether an institution appears in it.

Institutions with a private-client office in Winterthur, in alphabetical order

  • UBS
  • Vontobel
  • ZKB

This list does not cover every institution active in Winterthur: it covers those in our database whose presence in Winterthur is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

What the Winterthur offices show

The three offices in the list do not present themselves in the same way. The page of the UBS branch on Stadthausstrasse lists services for private clients, including investing, and for companies. Vontobel's list of addresses gives an address for Bank Vontobel AG on Bahnhofplatz without detailing the services of that office. The page of the Zürcher Kantonalbank branch at Untertor lists advice for private individuals, including investing, and advice for companies. None of the three pages states whether substantial wealth is looked after locally or by a team in another office. We accessed these pages on 20 October 2026.

A branch page does not describe every service an institution offers, and the fact that a service is not mentioned does not mean that it is not offered. It does give you a useful question for your first conversation: would your relationship be looked after by someone at the Winterthur branch, or handed to a wealth management team based in another office?

Winterthur and Zurich: where will your meetings take place?

Winterthur is part of the canton of Zurich. For a wider choice of institutions, our page on private banks in Zurich lists those whose Zurich office we have verified, including the three institutions present in Winterthur.

If you live in Winterthur and work in Zurich, or the other way round, raise the question of where you will meet early on. Ask whether you can meet your banker at either office, whether regular reviews can take place remotely, and whether the same person looks after you in each case.

The official language of the canton of Zurich is German (art. 48 of the Zurich cantonal constitution). The language of your banking relationship is agreed with the institution and with your banker: if you would like to work in English, say so at the first contact, and ask in which language you will receive the agreement, statements and reports.

Your situation in Winterthur, and what to clarify

For several situations linked to the city's economy, here is what is worth clarifying in the first conversation.

Your situation in Winterthur, and what to clarify
Your situationWhat to clarify
You run a company, family-owned or notWhat belongs to the company (accounts, financing, occupational pensions for staff) and what belongs to your private wealth, and whether one institution would look after both, with one banker or two
Sale or handover of your companyWhen the sale proceeds will become available, the distinction between what stays in the company and what comes to you personally, and the timetable when the succession is being prepared within the family
Shares or options from an industrial or technology employerThe share of these securities in your wealth, which ones you can freely dispose of and which are still vesting or subject to a blocking period, and where they are held
You live in Winterthur and work in ZurichWhere and when meetings take place, and which office your banker is attached to
Recent move to SwitzerlandThe documents needed to open the relationship, the language of your exchanges and how assets remaining in your home country will be taken into account
Inheritance received or pension capital already paid outThe amount received or expected, its timing and what you expect from the organisation of this capital. Whether to withdraw pension capital is a decision taken beforehand and is not covered on this page

Our page on your situation sets out, for the whole of Switzerland, what is worth preparing after selling a business, receiving an inheritance or selling a property.

What matters when choosing a banker in Winterthur

Here are the criteria to look at when choosing a private banker in Winterthur, and the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Winterthur
CriterionQuestion to ask
Who looks after your wealthWill you be my day-to-day contact, or will my account be handed to a wealth management team, and in which office does it work?
Meeting placeCan we meet in Winterthur, in Zurich or remotely, and does that change who looks after me?
Your company and your private wealthIf my company is also a client, who looks after its relationship, who looks after my private wealth, and how are the two relationships coordinated?
Language of the relationshipIn which language will our meetings take place, and in which language will I receive the agreement, statements and reports?
How the relationship is organisedHow often will we review things together, how can I reach you between meetings, and who stands in for you when you are away?

These criteria match the questions of the AlpineCompare simulator: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

Different types of institution

In Winterthur, the list includes a private bank, a universal bank and the cantonal bank; a wealth management relationship can also be held with an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

Before your meeting, you can gather:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of, separating cash, securities already invested and employer shares;
  • if you run a company, a clear view of what belongs to the company and what belongs to you personally;
  • your timetable, for example the date on which sale proceeds or shares that are still blocked will become available;
  • a list of your assets and accounts outside Switzerland, if you have any;
  • your residence permit and proof of address in Switzerland, if you have just moved;
  • where you would prefer to meet, in Winterthur, in Zurich or remotely, and the language you wish to use, spoken and written;
  • your questions on continuity if your banker is away or changes.

During the conversation, note each banker's answers on the same points: you can then compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch in Winterthur

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Winterthur. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Winterthur, in Zurich or in another city, and whether they list English among their languages. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting are then agreed with them.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Winterthur to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers.

Why does the list show only three institutions?

It includes only the institutions in our database whose Winterthur office is published by the institution itself and verified by us. Other institutions may look after clients from Winterthur from another office, in Zurich for example. Our page on private banks in Zurich lists the institutions whose Zurich office we have verified.

Can a branch that does not mention wealth management look after my wealth?

A branch page does not describe every service the institution offers. Ask directly who would look after your wealth: someone at the branch, or a wealth management team attached to another office, with meetings in Winterthur, elsewhere or remotely.

Can my company and my private wealth be looked after by the same institution?

It depends on the institution and on your situation. In Winterthur, branch pages of institutions in the list mention services for companies as well as for private individuals. If you are thinking of bringing the two relationships together, ask who would look after each and how they would be coordinated; if you would rather keep them separate, say so in the first conversation.

Can I work with a private banker in Winterthur in English?

It depends on the institution and the banker. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker. As the canton's official language is German, also ask in which language you will receive the documents of the relationship.

Do shares from my employer count as assets I can entrust?

They are part of your financial assets, but not all of them are available in the same way. Distinguish the securities you can freely dispose of from those still vesting, such as restricted stock units, or subject to a blocking period, and say where they are held. Your banker can then understand what can be entrusted today and what will follow later.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Winterthur?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities, rather than total wealth, which includes, for example, the value of a home or of your company. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Winterthur?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
