Choosing a private banker in Zurich: language, situation and first meeting

To choose a private bank in Zurich, first settle the language of the relationship, spoken and written, then what your banker will need to understand about your situation: a recent move, shares received from your employer, the sale of a company or assets still held abroad. This page lists the institutions whose Zurich office we have verified, then the questions that will help you prepare a first conversation.

Choosing a private bank in Zurich's financial centre

According to the canton of Zurich, Zurich remains by far the largest financial centre in Switzerland; in 2023, one in ten people employed in the Zurich region worked in the financial sector (BAK Economics figures published by the canton, accessed on 20 October 2026). For you, this mainly means a very wide choice. Rather than starting from a list of names, start from what the relationship needs to cover: the language you want to use, what your assets consist of, the parts of your situation that go beyond Switzerland and how the relationship will be looked after.

This page is for people who live in Switzerland, in Zurich or the surrounding region, including those of another nationality, and for people preparing to move to the canton. We wrote it primarily for available financial assets of more than one million Swiss francs. This figure is a guide, not an entry requirement: each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients. For an overview of the selection criteria, see our page on Swiss private banks.

This list does not cover every institution active in Zurich: it covers those in our database whose presence in Zurich is published by the institution itself. The information published on institutions is indicative and must be confirmed with the institution concerned.

Two things about this list are specific to Zurich. The canton's own cantonal bank, Zürcher Kantonalbank, states in its 2025 annual report that it operates 51 branches in the canton of Zurich; the list links it to the city of Zurich, where it has its head office. Three cantonal banks from other cantons also appear in the list, because they publish an office in Zurich. Banque Cantonale de Genève has a branch there. Luzerner Kantonalbank states on its private banking page that it advises clients in person in Lucerne, Sursee and Zurich. St.Galler Kantonalbank counts Zurich among the six locations it lists for its private banking clients; its head office is in St. Gallen. In addition, several institutions in the list have their head office in another Swiss city and an office in Zurich: ask which office your banker is attached to and where the team that will look after your account works.

If you live in Uster

The list above covers the city of Zurich only. In Uster, in the Zurich Oberland, our database records three institutions: Bank BSU, the UBS branch on Bankstrasse and the Zürcher Kantonalbank branch on Webernstrasse. UBS and Zürcher Kantonalbank also appear in the Zurich list. Bank BSU, a cooperative bank with its head office on Bankstrasse in Uster, does not, as its three branches are in Uster, Volketswil and Dübendorf. Its locations page refers to personal advice ‘at the heart of the region’, and its website presents a wealth management mandate without linking it to a particular branch. The page of the UBS branch lists ‘Wealth Management’ among its services, alongside ‘Private Clients’ and ‘Corporate Banking’. The page of the Zürcher Kantonalbank branch lists personal service, advice for private individuals, including investing, property and mortgages, and advice for companies. We accessed the UBS and Zürcher Kantonalbank pages on 20 October 2026 and the Bank BSU pages on 21 October 2026. A branch page does not describe every service an institution offers, and a service that is not mentioned is not necessarily unavailable.

According to the City of Uster, four lines of the Zurich S-Bahn serve Uster. If you live in Uster and work in Zurich, or live elsewhere in the Zurich Oberland, ask whether you can meet your banker in Uster, in Zurich or remotely, and whether the same person looks after you in each case. If you already hold an account or a mortgage at a branch in Uster, also ask whether your wealth would be looked after by your current adviser or by a team in another office, and how the two relationships would be coordinated.

Which language will you use with a private banker in Zurich?

The official language of the canton of Zurich is German (art. 48 of the Zurich cantonal constitution). The language of your banking relationship, however, is agreed with the institution and with your banker: raise it before any meeting.

Distinguish two things. First, the language of meetings and calls: English, Standard German, French or another language. Then the language of the documents: the account-opening agreement, statements, portfolio reports and letters. A banker may speak your language without every document of the relationship being available in it. Also ask who will look after you in your language when your banker is away.

Common situations in Zurich, and what to clarify

At the end of 2025, the canton of Zurich had around 1,628,000 inhabitants, 29% of them foreign nationals, according to figures published by the canton. A recent move, family in several countries or a career with an international company are therefore common starting points when choosing a private banker. For each, here is what is worth clarifying in the first conversation.

Common situations in Zurich, and what to clarify
Your situationWhat to clarify
Recent move to SwitzerlandThe documents needed to open the relationship, the language of your exchanges and how assets remaining in your home country will be taken into account
Shares or options from your employerThe share of these securities in your wealth, which ones you can freely dispose of and which are still vesting or subject to a blocking period, and where they are held
Sale of your companyWhen the sale proceeds will become available, and the distinction between what stays in the company and what comes to you personally
Inheritance received or pension capital already paid outThe amount received or expected, its timing and what you expect from the organisation of this capital. Whether to withdraw pension capital is a decision taken beforehand and is not covered on this page
Family in several countriesFamily members and assets outside Switzerland, and the questions about passing on your wealth that you wish to discuss

What matters when choosing a banker in Zurich

Here are the criteria to look at when choosing a private banker in Zurich, and the question that lets you check each one in a first conversation.

What matters when choosing a banker in Zurich
CriterionQuestion to ask
Language of the relationshipIn which language will our meetings take place, and in which language will I receive the agreement, statements and reports?
Which office your banker belongs toAre you attached to the Zurich office, and who, in Zurich or at head office, will work on my account?
Understanding of your situationHow do you take into account shares from an employer, assets abroad or the proceeds of an upcoming sale?
Meeting placeWhere will we meet: at your Zurich office, at another office or remotely?
How the relationship is organisedHow often will we review things together, how can I reach you between meetings, and who stands in for you when you are away?

An office in Zurich makes meeting in person easier, but on its own it says nothing about how your relationship will be organised. If you live by the lake, in the Limmattal, in Winterthur or in a neighbouring canton, ask where your meetings would take place.

These criteria match the questions of the AlpineCompare simulator: your project, the amount involved, your canton, your language and what you expect from your banker.

Different types of institution

In Zurich, the list includes private banks, a universal bank and cantonal banks; a wealth management relationship can also be held with an independent asset manager. What distinguishes these models is explained on our page on types of institution and selection criteria.

If you are considering an independent asset manager, you can check that it appears on the list, published by FINMA, of portfolio managers licensed by FINMA and monitored by a supervisory organisation.

Preparing your first conversation

Before your meeting, you can gather:

  • the amount you are thinking of entrusting and what it consists of, separating cash, securities already invested and employer shares;
  • your timetable, for example the date on which funds will become available;
  • a list of your assets and accounts outside Switzerland, if you have any;
  • your residence permit and proof of address in Switzerland, if you have just moved;
  • the language you wish to use, spoken and written;
  • your questions on continuity if your banker is away or changes.

During the conversation, note each banker's answers on the same points: you can then compare several proposals on a common basis.

How AlpineCompare puts you in touch in Zurich

AlpineCompare is an introduction service and has no office in Zurich. The simulator asks you about your project, the amount involved, your canton of residence, your language and what you expect from your banker. Once your phone number is verified, you obtain a selection of private bankers from our partner institutions, with the option to be put in touch with one of them or to ask to be called back; nothing is passed to any partner until you have confirmed one of these two requests. A banker's direct contact details, where the banker provides them, are shown only after you have confirmed the introduction to that banker or asked that banker to call you back: this confirmation is your agreement to your request being passed to that banker and their institution, which receive it at that moment; AlpineCompare records this agreement and may rely on it with the institution to establish that the relationship arose through its introduction.

For each banker, the selection shows their institution, city and languages, so you can see whether a banker is based in Zurich and whether they list English among their languages. If you send them a request, that banker and their institution may contact you; the arrangements for a meeting are then agreed with them.

  • AlpineCompare is paid by the partner institution, under a business-introduction agreement, when a client it introduced signs a contract with that institution; the service is free for you.
  • Only private bankers of partners can be presented to you; institutions without a partnership are described on the site in the same way as the others.
  • Remuneration plays no part in the selection of the profiles shown or in their order.
  • The selection depends on the partner bankers whose profile matches your request; it may include bankers based in other cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Zurich to use the simulator?

No. Introductions are offered to private individuals domiciled in Switzerland and to persons preparing to move to Switzerland. Your canton is one of the pieces of information used to put together your selection of bankers.

Can I work with a private banker in Zurich in English?

It depends on the institution and the banker. The selection obtained with the simulator shows the languages declared by each banker. As the canton's official language is German, also ask in which language you will receive the documents of the relationship.

Will the documents of the relationship be in English?

This is a question to ask before the relationship is opened. Depending on the institution, the agreement, statements and reports may exist in several languages or in only one. Ask in which language you will receive them, and whether an important document can be explained to you in your language.

Do shares from my employer count as assets I can entrust?

They are part of your financial assets, but not all of them are available in the same way. Distinguish the securities you can freely dispose of from those still vesting, such as restricted stock units, or subject to a blocking period, and say where they are held. Your banker can then understand what can be entrusted today and what will follow later.

How much wealth do you need to approach a private bank in Zurich?

Each institution sets its own criteria for taking on new clients; there is no amount common to all Zurich institutions. Think in terms of available financial assets, meaning cash and securities, rather than total wealth, which includes, for example, the value of a home. To find private bankers from our partner institutions who meet your criteria, complete the simulator.

Does AlpineCompare have an office in Zurich?

No. AlpineCompare is an online introduction service. Meetings take place with the banker you contact, according to their institution's arrangements.

Are partner institutions given prominence in the list?

No. The list is in alphabetical order, and being an AlpineCompare partner changes neither the order nor whether an institution is listed. The simulator, on the other hand, only presents bankers from partner institutions.
